Employee Spotlight: John Nixon

by Douglass Tinker, on April 23, 2021

Each month, we highlight one of our employees by doing a virtual "20 Questions" with them, some of which are about their work with Reusability, and others of which help us get to know them better. This month our employee spotlight is on our Marketing Manager, John Nixon.

  1. What do you do at Reusability?
    1. Marketing Manager – I oversee all our marketing output, including the website, print and digital content, and events. I also manage many of the internal processes we have in place to help facilitate our sales team, and I occasionally get to write a blog post.

  2. What’s the biggest misconception people have about your position?
    1. I think most people conflate “marketing” with “advertising”, but the truth is that advertising is just one – usually small – part of a company’s marketing department. I actually spend much more time making platforms work together efficiently and strategizing how we will communicate new initiatives to our network than creating ads.

  3. If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?
    1. Playing the piano. I play other instruments, so I know basic piano, but it would be really fun to sit down at a piano and play like Herbie Hancock or something.

  4. What is the one thing you can’t resist?
    1. Donuts.

  5. What is your greatest fear?
    1. Death by an avoidable disease.

  6. Where is your favorite place to be?
    1. On stage, playing music.

  7. What is the weirdest job you’ve ever had?
    1. I was once the office manager for an Aikido dojo and the copy editor for its now-defunct Aikido magazine. I didn’t practice Aikido (though I learned a lot about it).

  8. Of any trips you’ve taken, what was your favorite?
    1. Hard to pick, but I’d say Bali for my honeymoon. Highly recommended if you can swing it.

  9. Favorite movie?
    1. Oof, who came up with these questions? I can’t pick just one! Maybe a toss-up between The Godfather and Barry Lyndon?

  10. What do you love doing outside of work?
    1. Playing music and hanging out with my wife and two daughters.

  11. If you could meet one person, living or dead, who would it be?
    1. Jerry Garcia. That answer will make me popular with a small group of people, and mostly unpopular with everyone else.

  12. If you set your music player to random, what are the 3 songs most likely to play?
    1. I just did this to test and it came up with 2 random Grateful Dead live tunes and “Slip Slidin' Away” by Paul Simon. Man, I’m getting old.

  13. What is the first concert you attended?
    1. Probably my older brother’s 8th grade piano recital? First big one was Phish when I was a freshman in high school. Talk about culture shock.

  14. What book did you read most recently?
    1. Just Kids by Patti Smith

  15. What household chore do you hate the most?
    1. Cleaning the bathroom.

  16. What is your favorite type of food?
    1. Pizza. And Donuts.

  17. Favorite TV show?
    1. Deadwood is the greatest TV show of all time.

  18. What is one thing, big or small, that you are really good at?
    1. Understanding what someone is talking about even when they aren’t using any of the right words and everyone else can't fathom what they're saying.

  19. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
    1. A center fielder for the Yankees. Also one of those 'popular with a few/unpopular with most' kind of answer.

  20. Finally, why did you choose to work at Reusability?
    1. Because the world needs more people devoting their day-to-day time and energy to work that lessens our impact on the rapidly deteriorating environment. I believe that many people think (because I used to be one of them) that to help the environment you have to give everything up and go live in the woods or something. Turns out you can also just find a job where the company is in the business of helping the environment! (And, of course, continue to be conscientious about consumption. That should go without saying.) Plus, everyone here is great, which makes the work that much more enjoyable
